FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 9, 2012 - Kaytee, a Central Garden & Pet brand, is recalling two products, Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Macaw, due to high levels of vitamin D. These products are used primarily by bird breeders for feeding baby birds. Baby birds being fed the formula may run the risk of kidney failure when ingesting the product.
The products being recalled were manufactured over a limited range of dates. Products manufactured prior to these dates and after these dates have been tested and are safe for feeding to baby birds. Consumers should inspect the product packaging for the “Best Before Code (date)” to determine if it is affected by this recall. All distributors have been notified of the recall and have been asked to reach out to their retail customers and to immediately remove the affected products from the shelf.

This recall is being initiated due to an elevated amount of vitamin D that was unintentionally added in an isolated mixing batch during the manufacturing process.
No other Kaytee bird foods are involved in this recall.
As part of our commitment to bird breeders and others who use our products to nourish baby birds, we are recalling the product. Kaytee has a long history of supplying only the best quality and expertly manufactured products for birds. We have closely reviewed our manufacturing procedures and believe this was an isolated incident.

No. The only affected products are five Kaytee exact hand feeding products:

What are the signs of illness with birds that have eaten the affected Kaytee exact Hand Feeding Formula?
Baby birds that have consumed formula with high vitamin D levels may become weak and inactive and show a lack of appetite, vomiting, increased thirst, and have increased urine excretion (watery droppings).
What is the cause of illness?
Consumption of formula with high levels of vitamin D can cause illness associated with kidney damage.
What is vitamin D?
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is required for calcium and phosphorus metabolism and is important for normal bone, beak, claw, and eggshell formation.
What is the preferred treatment for suspected cases?
Pet owners should stop feeding the affected food immediately and consult with their veterinarian. The recommended treatment of baby birds that have consumed formulas high in vitamin D is fluid therapy to keep the birds well hydrated. The birds should be kept warm, and tube feeding may be needed.
What should pet owners do if they have a baby bird that has eaten the recalled product?
Pet owners should immediately stop feeding affected products to their birds and consult with their veterinarian if they observe any of the clinical signs.
What laboratory tests are useful for clinical diagnosis?
Your veterinarian may do blood testing to diagnose kidney disease. These tests may include blood uric acid, calcium,and phosphorus levels.
